Dominica Set to Participate in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest

Dominica Chess players are set to participate in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary from September 10th to 23rd, 2024. The Dominican contingent comprises 5 male and 5 female players participating in the Open and Women’s Tournaments respectively. Also, the Dominica Chess Federation president – Mr Ian Dorival serving as delegate, will attend the FIDE 2024 Congress also being held in Budapest, from September 17th to 22nd.

The Dominican players based on board order 1 to 4, plus reserve player, are as follows: for the Open Tournament: Jones Murphy, Robert Bridet, Nigel Francis, Larry Thomas, and Lyndon Auguiste. For the Women’s Tournament: Ayani Casimir, Liudmila Domennova, Zahidu Henry, Desalee Daniel and Dorothy Jno Baptiste. Players were chosen based on being the top performers in the National tournaments held earlier this year.

The Olympiad is one of the premier chess events organized every 2 years by FIDE (the International Chess Federation, which is the governing body for the sport of chess). The Chess Olympiad is an over-the-board team competition where national chess federations compete for gold medals, trophies, and the title of strongest chess nation in the world. More than 190 teams will participate in the Open section of the event. This year’s Olympiad has 11 rounds and is a team Swiss tournament played in classical time control – 90+30. At the end of the event, the team with the most match points wins. The Dominica Chess Federation is particularly pleased to be able to field a Women’s team for the first time this year. This achievement is in alignment with one of FIDE’s key initiatives: – to increase the number of female players in the sport of chess.

The teams have been in intense training over the past several months with international coaches assigned to prepare them to perform at their highest level.

Dominica’s participation in the 45th Chess Olympiad is sponsored by FIDE as well as the Dominica Olympic Committee. Our heartfelt thanks to the DOC for its continued partnership and investment in the Federation which makes possible the fulfillment of our mandate to showcase and improve chess on the island.
