The Calypso Fraternity has lost one of it’s great, in the name of Beryl “Lady B” Samuel.
Best known for her cutting edge songs that not so subtly masked her messages, Haxey describes her as a “calypsonian of idomitable character”. He stated that Lady B was in the echelons of Calypso icons like Mighty Acre, who also recently passed.
Lady B no stranger to the Calypso arena, made many sacrifices for the opportunity to sing Calypsos. Haxey reminisced that many a time, she would walk for miles in the dark, after practices to get home.
For one who was so passionate about the art of bringing forward her music, she paid no mind whether she would be put through to the next round – it never dampened her spirit.
For Haxey, he saw it as a great honor to have known Lady B and hopefully stated that she is “bound to be continuing her calypso journey in the great calypso pastures beyond”.
