The Hillsborough bridge commonly referred to as the Layou bridge will be constructed in the coming months greatly alleviating traffic congestion for a number or persons who utilize the bridge daily.
The Eastern bridge which took motorists into Tarreau on their way to Roseau was severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria. Since then motorists have been forced to use the Western bridge for traffic in both directions causing a few accidents.
The Government of Dominica recently signed a contract with Offshore Civil and Marine Inc which will see the beginning of construction of the bridge in April and continuing for a period of about eight months. The total cost of construction is estimated at about ECD 9 million.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Representative for the area which forms part of the St. Joseph constituency, Hon.Adis King expressed her approval of the project.
She said, ” This has not only created a level of inconvenience, for those of us using this route several times a day, but it has also led to chaotic activities at times and so this project is welcomed wholeheartedly since it will impact a huge section of our people. This is also happening at a time when major economies across the world are collapsing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic”.
