Thirty housing units were recently handed over at BelleVue Rawle as part of Government’s Housing Revolution Programme. The houses which are all 3 bedroom units have been constructed by Montreal Management Corporation (MMC(E)) and will provide accommodation for about 103 persons.
Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit said that there could be no greater gift at Christmas for the new homeowners than these brand new homes.
He said that all the residences built are of the same quality and standards irrespective of which part of Dominica that they are being built. He can attest to the quality of houses delivered by MMCE and stated that when visiting the houses at Belle Vue Chopin, his son who was with him at the time, asked him whether they were getting one of those.
According to PM Skerrit despite the criticisms, the Housing Revolution will continue until every family in Dominica is in a comfortable home. He commented that Dominicans work hard and try to build their own homes by purchasing blocks and sand but many times, these materials stay there unused as persons just don’t have the means to build. Therefore the Government will continue to assist in building homes for persons in order to lift them up out of their situation. He said that as a Christian society we should not find fault in the Government assisting citizens.
The Prime Minister addressed those in public office who would prefer to build their own homes and said that he is working on a concept to meet their particular situation because he understands the high cost of land on island as well as the length of time it takes to repay loans taken to purchase land and build.
Skerrit said that it is his hope that this concept (building of homes and selling to individuals) will be ready to present after the Christmas season.
