Youth Of Portsmouth Urged To Stay Away From Weapons Of Mass Destruction Presented To Them By Society

“The world is getting tougher, perverse, and diabolic, and you are potentially susceptible to the wiles and stratagems of the merciless, unforgiving environment.”

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Claude Weekes delivered a strong and powerful message to the youth of Dominica at the Youth Power Symposium held on May 27, 2023. In his deliberation, Weekes warned the youth of the dangers of following the paths of drug abuse, violence, and promiscuity, calling them “weapons of mass destruction” against their promising futures.

The Assistant Superintendent, while delivering his speech, mentioned the ill effects that the use and abuse of drugs has on an individual. He highlighted specifically, alcohol, marijuana, and crack cocaine, as he believes that these drugs are those being frequently used.

Weeks stated, “Drugs kill, my dear young people who are here today. But it does not only kill but it steals from you. It steals your education, your character, your family, your savings, your health. It just puts you out of touch with the world. And I please beg you to stay away from drugs and the incessant use of alcohol. “

Furthermore, he assured them that the use of these drugs will cost them trips to the Dominica State Prison, permanently tainting their reputation and narrowing their future opportunities. The Assistant Superintendent also advised the youth to “learn to run from trouble” rather than resorting to violence as the solution to conflict. He explained that while the natural response to conflict may be to lash out, we must look for better ways to solve our problems.

Weekes uttered, “It does not say you’re a coward. What it says is you are a peace maker, and that blesses God’s heart. Some of our young people exercise violence against our teachers, parents and authorities in general…But let me warn you if you continue along that route or trajectory, you will end up before the courts where you are likely to be sent to jail.”

Additionally, he addressed the matter of sexual promiscuity and its role in teenage pregnancy, single parenthood, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and birth defects.

He expressed, “Young boys and girls, you are precious people made in God’s image. Therfore I urge you to stay away from illicit sex. Take your time and study your school work, with a view to achieving a sound education.”

The Assistant Superintendent encouraged the youth to have long term plans for their lives and to be focused throughout their school life so that they can achieve their goals. He advised them to not fall into the traps that the world may lay in front of them.

Weekes added that we all need to work together to prevent these unfortunate events from happening and to make an effort to mitigate the effect that it has on communities.

He enunciated, “We must not adore, and glorify, an canonize those who are bent on spoiling our children by introducing them to drugs and unlawful sexual activities. The culprits, the perverts, must be stopped in their tracks and be brought to justice.”

He told the youth that they need to protect themselves, their friends, and the nation by reporting these individuals to the authorities. Moreover, he urged the public to educate the young ones on these subjects. Weekes stated that schools, churches, media houses, and other social agencies all have their part to play in putting a stop to these “weapons of mass destruction”.

“It is indeed everybody’s business and not only government-centric. We have to pool our resources and tackle the problem head on.”

The Youth Power Symposium was organized by Mrs. Jane Cornelius of JoyCup Academy and featured speakers on various topics. Cornelius said that this is the first of many such events that she intends to do as she realizes the youth need help.
