The Class of 2025 at Pierre Charles Secondary School proudly celebrated their graduation with an inspiring ceremony, headlined by a moving address from 16-year-old Walson Jr. Pacquette of Grand Bay, who served as valedictorian.
Walson, who graduated with honors and earned 10 subject awards, welcomed the audience with warmth and confidence. In his address, he acknowledged the journey that brought him and his peers to this milestone, recognizing the role of perseverance, hard work, and faith. He paid tribute to his parents, both educators, for instilling in him the values that shaped his academic journey.
“Education is our passport to the future,” Walson declared, echoing the class theme, “for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” He compared education to a passport, noting that just as a passport opens borders, education opens minds, unlocking opportunity and preparing students for a better quality of life.
Reflecting on his first day of high school amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Walson shared vivid memories of early days in Room 1 under the guidance of Mr. Desirée. From movie outings to online learning during quarantine, he recounted the resilience of the class in the face of challenges, including the academic rigors of SBAs, CSEC exams, and pandemic disruptions.
Despite the trials, Walson highlighted the shared laughter and unforgettable memories—debating house colours, the comedic mishaps involving classmates, and even a humorous scare that a chicken bone might derail their graduation. His speech was a celebration not just of academic triumphs, but of camaraderie, growth, and the shared experiences that defined the Class of 2025.
He expressed deep gratitude to God, quoting scripture and recognizing divine guidance throughout his journey. He also thanked teachers, friends, and in particular, his close companions Nelly and Alejandro, for their constant support. Walson paid special homage to his parents, praising his father’s unwavering motivation and his mother’s wise counsel, both of whom made countless sacrifices to help him succeed.
Quoting inspirational figures such as Gandhi, Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Einstein, Walson urged his fellow graduates to believe in their dreams, pursue their goals with confidence, and carry forward the values they’ve learned.
“As the class of 2025, we are the future,” he said, envisioning his classmates in a wide range of careers—from doctors and lawyers to entertainers and athletes—each one equipped with their ‘educational passport’ stamped by hard work and dedication.
Walson’s academic achievements are extraordinary. He received subject awards in English A, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Agricultural Science, Principles of Business, General French, Health & Family Life, Electricity, Physical Education, and Information Technology. He was also named Top Student in his class and earned a Special Award for Outstanding Chess Performance. His consistent honor roll status and recognition as the top speller in the school’s competition in Form 3 further highlight his excellence.
Even before secondary school, Walson stood out as the only scholarship recipient from the Grand Bay district in the Grade 6 National Assessment, and winner of the DOWASCO national essay competition. A technology enthusiast from the age of two, Walson’s interests in reading, writing, and computing grew alongside his humble and disciplined nature.
A passionate chess player, Walson placed third in the Dominica Chess Federation National U18 Junior Tournament in 2024 and aspires to become a Grand Master representing Dominica internationally. He is also a member of Aithon’s Athletics Club and the Dominica Robotics Program, actively engaging in track events and tech innovation.
Reflecting on his journey, Walson shared:
“These achievements make me feel accomplished and make me look back and say, ‘It was all worth it.’ To the young people, I encourage you to trust in God, work towards your goals with discipline, and have confidence in your own abilities.”
As the ceremony concluded, Walson Jr. Pacquette stood as a shining example of what dedication, humility, and vision can achieve. His address left a lasting impression, not only celebrating the Class of 2025 but inspiring the entire community to dream boldly and work faithfully toward a brighter future.
