The La Plaine Local Government Saga: What’s next?

There seems to be a never-ending impasse between councilor-elect of the La Plaine Local Council Elections, Jason Fontaine, and rival forces. Fontaine who contested and won the local elections about a year ago had a bumpy ride ever since. He was removed shortly after under Section 8 of the Local Council Ordinance which paved the way for a by-election. Fontaine contested the by-election in October 2018 and was successful, but since then he has not received the designation of the oath to serve in office.

Emonews is very familiar with the story and can confirm that the staff and Commissioner of the Dominica Local Government are frustrated with the stalemate over Fontaine and at least three councilors who, for whatever reason, have been adopting stalling tactics over the past three attempts to have the oath administered to councilor-elect Fontaine.

If this matter remains unresolved, recommendations could be advanced for the dissolution of the La Plaine Council under cap 190 of the 1961 Revised Laws of Dominica, but it appears that the local authorities would rather have the matter settle amicably.

This last attempt to have Fountain seated on Thursday January 17, 2018 failed. It is left to see what happens next, but this back and forth leave skeptics and observers with more questions than answers.
