The Rotary Club of Dominica is pleased to announce the successful completion of improvement works at the Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU), marking another significant contribution to the enhancement of public healthcare services in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
The completion of the works was officially marked at a ceremony held on Friday, January 30, 2026 attended by key stakeholders, health professionals, and members of the Rotary Club of Dominica. Addresses were delivered by the Honourable Cassanni Laville, Minister for Health, Wellness and Social Services, and Rotary District 7030 Governor Soraya A.J. Warner-Gustave.

The completion of the works at the APU was made possible through funding generated from the Original Carnival Souse and Punch, held every year on Carnival Sunday. It is important to note that all proceeds from this annual fundraising initiative are carefully allocated to the execution of meaningful community development projects such as this. The total cost of the completed works amounted to XCD$44,218.92, an investment that reflects the Club continued commitment to service above self.
In his remarks, Minister Cassanni Laville expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club of Dominica for its continued partnership with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services and for its tangible contribution to improving conditions at the Acute Psychiatric Unit. He emphasized the importance of safe, dignified, and well-maintained facilities in supporting mental health care delivery and patient recovery.
Rotary District 7030 Governor Soraya A.J. Warner-Gustave commended the Rotary Club of Dominica for its dedication to service above self, noting that the completed works reflect Rotary’s core values of compassion, community service, and sustainable impact. She highlighted the project as an example of how collaboration between service organizations and government can produce meaningful and lasting benefits for the wider society.
The President of the Rotary Club of Dominica, Dr. Jermaine Jewel Jean-Pierre noted that the project forms part of the Club’s ongoing efforts to support the national health system through targeted interventions that enhance infrastructure and patient well-being in keeping with one of Rotary International’s seven areas of focus “Disease Prevention and Treatment. The Club reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside public and private sector partners to address priority needs within the community.
The APU is a building of great importance and deep significance to the Rotary Club of Dominica. Constructed in 1982 through the vision, commitment, and resources of the Club, the facility stands as a lasting symbol of Rotary’s dedication to service above self and to the sustainable development of our community.
The Club expressed appreciation to the Management of Harris Paint Dominica for donating some of the paint for the project, to volunteers, and supporters whose contributions made the project possible.
The Rotary Club of Dominica also extends sincere thanks to the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services and the management and staff of the Acute Psychiatric Unit for their cooperation and continued dedication to providing compassionate care to some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
