The Ministry of Agriculture, Blue and Green Economy and Food Security is in the process of putting plans in place to roll out the White Potatoe season.
According to White Potatoe Coordinator, Delroy Williams, farmers may begin to register for the seeds which are expected to arrive early December.
He said, “The established date for arrival is December the 11th, so we’re hoping at the ministry level we can start the selling of the seeds from the 15th of December.”
He continued, “Farmers are asked to be in contact with their regional offices, make the necessary arrangements in terms of land preparations and so forth. We will be doing our best to ensure that the farmers have the necessary assistance in terms of fertilizers and other technical assistance that they need to produce the crop and we’re hoping for a very fruitful season. The variety of seeds that we are importing is Desire Elite seeds between 35 – 55 mm which is the ideal size that has been requested by not only the farmers but also our supermarkets.”
Farmers are required to provide certain information including but not limited to, farm location and acreage at the time of registration.
