Haitian Flag Day Celebrated in Portsmouth

Haitian nationals gathered at Purple Turtle Beach in the town of Portsmouth to celebrate Haitian Flag Day. This day is celebrated each year on May 18th.

The Haitian flag retains the blue and red colors of the French flag, coupled with the Coat of Arms of Haiti. It is Haitian tradition that the flag was created by the revolutionary leader, Dessalines, who took a French flag and tore off the white center. Since then, the flag has been variated between red and blue and red and black stripes by successive leaders.

Flag day activities may be found wherever Haitians are residing as they have been proven to be very patriotic. Flag day activities at Purple Turtle ended with live ‘Kompa’ music by DJ Power. Emonews says ‘Felicitations’ to all her Haitian supporters.
