Government Plans To Adjust Minimum Wage

Minister for Justice, Immigration and National  Security, Hon. Rayburn Blackmore revealed that Government has plans to adjust minimum wage in Dominica.]He said, “An advisory board was established to look at all the variables and to come up with some recommendations in so far as the adjustment to minimum wage is concerned and as we speak we are in the process of actually taking the requisite steps to further readjust the minimum wage as was actually promised before the election”.

He explained, “In Dominica, we have it by categories, that is to say, unskilled workers, home assistants, shop assistants, receptionists etc, so a receptionist would carry a higher minimum wage than somebody who is working as a laborer or as an unskilled worker. So the notion that Dominica as we speak is the lowest is not true. What people are doing is that they are taking the lowest of the lowest to spread it across the board”.

The Minister said that notwithstanding the misrepresentation of facts concerning minimum wage in Dominica, there is justification to adjust it.
