Last week, a number of activities were held to commemorate World Fisheries Day which is celebrated on November 20.
Chief Fisheries Officer (Ag) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Julien Defoe said that World Fisheries Day was started by Fishing Communities many years ago.
He said that since fishing is listed as one of the most dangerous yet beneficial occupations, it is right and just to have World Fisheries Day.
In Dominica, World Fisheries was celebrated from November 15, and culminated with a clean up activity in Pottersville. There were also informative sessions on radio which educated the public about World Fisheries Day as well as issues involved in Fishing such as preservation and involvement of stakeholders.
A number of fish vendors were recognized for their partnership with fisherfolk.
