World Stroke Day, This October 29th, 2024 was marked by an inspiring show of unity in Dominica, led by the Dominica Hospitals Authority (DHA) through the Wear Purple Campaign. Administrative, Clinical Staff and Medical Students gathered at the hospital’s lobby under a purple arch, symbolizing collective commitment to raise awareness for stroke prevention and to educate on the importance of early recognition of stroke symptoms. With the support of private businesses and individuals, the campaign reached great heights, as people came together to emphasize the life-saving message of recognizing stroke symptoms.
Advanced Island Care Inc. played a vital role in orchestrating the campaign, joined by the RayAsta Foundation, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to stroke prevention and caregiver training. The foundation provided essential guidelines and tips to potential caregivers, equipping families and communities with knowledge that can make a life-changing difference. Local pharmacies, including Quickare Pharmacy, Bull’s Eye Pharmacy, and First Choice Pharmacy, as well as Lindo Mart Supermarket, and all the media houses rallied in support, spreading the word and reinforcing the message that stroke awareness is everyone’s responsibility.
This campaign was not just a show of solidarity but a powerful reminder that strokes are often preventable and that quick action can mean the difference between life and death. At its core was the FAST acronym—Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call for help—echoing across the island to equip Dominicans with essential tools to recognize and respond to stroke symptoms immediately. By understanding and sharing these warning signs, individuals become empowered to help themselves and others seek timely medical attention, reducing the risk of severe complications or death.
As the campaign came to a close, the energy and determination were clear: this is only the beginning. With hopes for an even larger event next year, the Dominica Hospitals Authority (DHA) and the supporting community call on everyone to stay engaged, spread awareness, and continue the journey toward a healthier, more informed Dominica. Together, we can make every second count in the fight against stroke. Remember to Be Fast – Act FAST!
