Creole Symposium Dubbed An Overwhelming Success; Students To Begin Learning Creole By Third Term

A creole Symposium organized by Leroy ‘Wadico/ Wadix’ Charles of Creole Heartbeat Magazine in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Open Campus, the National Youth Council and the Ministry of Education, held on Wednesday has been hailed as an overwhelming success with proposed action coming out of the symposium to be put into effect in the near future.

Wadix, long time creole advocate, along with his dear friend, the late Felix Henderson says that he excited and looking forward to keep working for the advancement of Creole. He is excited about the strategies outlined in the symposium.

“I’m very excited because I could finally see the vision of people like the late Felix Henderson and Jamal Fontaine. Finally, I’m feeling that something is going to happen with the Creole language because we have kind of been in doubt of late because less of the language is being spoken…I’m really excited personally and I’m looking forward to moving that movement that Creole movement into fruition”.

Education Minister,  Hon. Octavia Alfred promised that a new initiative,  ‘A 5 Minute Pause for a Creole Cause’ will take effect as soon as the third term of this school year.

Meanwhile, Chief Cultural Officer, Raymond Lawrence said that a new Creole Dictionary will be available soon. He mentioned that the Komite pour Etude Kweyol(KEK) will celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Wadix expressed thanks to the media houses who carried the symposium live in an effort to get the message out there. He said that the feedback from the public is very positive.

Stakeholders such as Creole Heartbeat Magazine, the NYC, the UWIOC and the ministries of Education and Health will reconvene on Wednesday to continue to chart the way forward for the development of Creole in the Nature Island.
