Tuesday, 17 November 2020 | Bridgetown, Barbados – Car owners, car enthusiasts and persons interested in the growing electric vehicle (EV) market in the Region, will have an opportunity to take a virtual drive on Friday 20 November.
The ‘Take a Drive’ Virtual Electric Vehicle Roadshow is one of the activities of CARICOM Energy Month which is being held under the theme “A Resilient Community: Energy at the Centre”. The two-hour virtual tour will be hosted by the CARICOM Secretariat and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE).
Through video presentations and a question-and-answer session, tour participants will be able to virtually experience and discuss the operation and maintenance of electric vehicles, as well as the cost and types of vehicles available in the Caribbean.
As the region continues its transition to a low-carbon future, the use of EVs is essential to decarbonising the transportation sector. “To guide the development of the electric mobility sector within the region, the CCREEE – as a member of the Regional Electric Vehicle Working Group – developed a framework for the Regional Electric Vehicle Strategy on behalf of the working group”, Dr Gary Jackson, Executive Director of the CCREEE said. With the development of the strategy currently underway, the region stands to benefit from a comprehensive approach, to support uptake.
Dr. Gary Jackson will present during the two-hour tour, along with: Ms. Joanna Edghill of Megapower Ltd, Mr. Visham Babwah of the Trinidad and Tobago Automotive Dealers Association and Mr. Xavier Gordon of Xergy Limited.

CARICOM Energy Month activities at the regional level are being held by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat’s Energy Unit in collaboration with the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE), the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), along with the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) funded Technical Assistance Programme for Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean (TAPSEC).

CARICOM Energy was commissioned in 2008 under the Directorate of Trade and Economic Integration to coordinate the finalization of the regional energy policy and provide strategic management for a programmatic approach to the region’s energy issues.
The Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS) was designed by CARICOM Energy to build on existing efforts in the Region and to provide CARICOM Member States with a coherent strategy for transitioning to sustainable energy. The Technical Assistance Programme for Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean (TAPSEC) supports the region’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable and climate-compatible development pathway by increasing and improving access to modern, affordable and sustainable energy services, to the benefit of all Caribbean citizens, especially those who are most disproportionately affected by a lack of access to energy.
To achieve this mission, through multi-stakeholder partnerships, the TAPSEC team leads the implementation of Policy, Information and Capacity Development, and Finance interventions towards the implementation of the CARICOM Energy Policy (CEP), the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS), and the various national energy policies and strategies of Caribbean states.
The TAPSEC is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and made possible through the financial support of the European Union (EU) under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF-11), with an additional financial allocation from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
The TAPSEC is implemented in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) of the Dominican Republic.
