World Oceans Day is recognized globally on June 8th every year. The concept for this important day was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. The day was identified to raise awareness of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on sustainable management practices of the world’s oceans. This year, the day will be celebrated under the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”.
As part of World Oceans Day 2021 the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security have planned activities that involve a coastal clean-up in the community of Colihaut on Sunday June 6th, 2021, from 9am.
Marine pollution has become a global concern as the negative impact on the health of the marine environment is increasing. In keeping with this year’s theme, we want to encourage citizens to be responsible as it relates to proper garbage disposal in order to protect livelihoods that depend on marine resources.
