Children Of Cancer Patients Hailed As Rock Of Support To Parents

The Youth Arm of the Dominica Cancer Association made it’s annual Scholarship presentation to children who are affected in some way by Cancer.

The association’s fundraising efforts were greatly hampered because of the Covid-19 pandemic resulting in only three scholarships being awarded.

Spokesperson of the Youth Arm of the Dominica Cancer Association, Althea Cornelius said, “The group was initially started because we acknowledge that in the same manner the patient was affected, the children were also directly affected”.

She listed the three basic functions of the organization which are to provide emotional support for children, to organize the scholarship programme and provide homework support and in doing so to serve as an extended family.

This year’s recipients are Brittany Augustine of Vielle Case, and Sarah Harve of Roseau.

Cornelius encouraged Brittany Augustine to continue to be the rock of support that she has been to her mom and to do well academically. Her scholarship was made possible through the kind donation of Ann Robinson.

She reminded Sarah that she will always have support at the organization no matter what comes her way.

The third scholarship went to Miah Bully who is the only scholarship recipient to become an active member of the organization. Cornelius said that Miah not only continues to be an active member of the group but she also shows great appreciation for her scholarship and consistently performs well at school and voluntarily provides her report each term.

Cornelius also made an appeal on the behalf of two young men the society would like to assist, one of whom lost his mom to the dreaded disease.
