Canadian Youth Internship Volunteers Positively Impacting Dominica

Three young women have been volunteering their time and efforts in contributing to youth development in Dominica. They are Kayla Funk, Teagen Olmstead, and Emily Burkholder.

The young women are a part of the International Youth Internship funded by Global Affairs Canada. This program is a three-year program which began in 2017 and will conclude in 2020. The College of TEH Rookies has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DSC to host the internship.

The first two interns arrived after Hurricane Maria and did the groundwork for the arrival of the others. The team has been working at the student affairs office at the DSC, the Ministry of Tourism and at the Achievement Learning Center. This year the number of interns have increased to 4 with the arrival of Catalina Para who will join Teagan in the Ministry of Tourism.

Kayla Funk has been at the Achievement Learning Centre as a program and development officer. She says, “I’ve been in Dominica less than four weeks working at the Special Education School, Achievement Learning Centre (ALC) and within that time the students have already started finding their way into my heart. When we celebrated the graduation of two of the students, I mostly laughed, I may have shed a few tears as well. So happy to be apart of the team at ALC and developing programmes that will benefit our students!”
