In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations Security Council called an emergency session and proposed a resolution demanding Russia to withdraw its forces and seize its acts of violence against Ukraine. Such emergency sessions are rare given that the last emergency session of the General Assembly was held in 1982, exactly four decades ago.
Pointedly, at the emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly, 141 countries of the total 193 member states voted for the resolution while thirty-five countries including China abstained.
Notably, the five member states who voted against the resolution include Russia, North Korea, Belarus, Eritrea and Syria.
Interestingly, the resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly is not legally binding, however, it may carry political weight. Therefore, Russia may lose political favor while Ukraine continues to succeed in drawing the support of the other member states.
The western countries have pledged their support and condemnation of the acts initiated by Russia by imposing severe financial sanctions on Russia.
Despite these sanctions, on day six of Russia’s invasion there is an intensification of its military forces and more attacks on Ukraine.
Russia’s reaction to the resolution is uncertain at this time, but many believe it will result in further crisis.
