Youth Take the Lead in Agriculture: Marigot Youth Center Hosts 2025 World Food Day Celebrations Under the Theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”

The Marigot Youth Center came alive as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through the Youth Development Division, hosted the 2025 World Food Day celebrations under the global theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.”

Funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the event brought together seven schools and their 4-H Clubs from the North East and East Districts for a day of competition, learning, and agricultural awareness.

The opening ceremony featured inspiring words from Hon. Lakeyia Joseph, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, who encouraged students to see agriculture as vital to Dominica’s future. She was joined by Mr. Anthony Charles, Parliamentary Representative for Marigot, who also gave encouraging remarks highlighting the importance of youth participation in agriculture and community development.

Additional remarks came from Ms. Miranda Stephenson, Technical Officer, and Ms. Meritta Hyacinth, Chief Youth Development Officer, who both emphasized the significance of World Food Day and the role of young people in food security, healthy living, and environmental sustainability.

Students then engaged in a spirited World Food Day Jeopardy Competition covering categories such as the global theme, agriculture and food production, water, environment and sustainability, Dominica’s botany, and healthy eating and nutrition.

Emerging victorious was the Sineku Primary School 4-H Club, followed by Concord Primary School in second place, Will Strathmore Stevens Primary School in third, and Salybia Primary School in fourth.

The day closed with hands-on demonstrations and exhibitions led by agriculture officers and nutritionists, who guided students through composting activities, smart water use in farming, seedling production, healthy eating and nutrition practices, and plant quarantine and protection.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, schools from the Eastern District showcased an array of local confectionaries, fruits, citrus, and provisions.

The event was hailed as both engaging and educational, leaving participants with a greater appreciation for agriculture, healthy lifestyles, and sustainable food systems in Dominica.
