Three Indian sailors have been confirmed dead following a U.S. military strike on an oil tanker off the coast of Oman, according to India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The sailors were initially reported missing after the incident before their deaths were confirmed.
The Palau-flagged tanker, MT Settebello, was carrying 24 Indian crew members when it was struck. Twenty-one crew members were rescued, while search and rescue efforts were launched for the missing sailors.
The U.S. military said the vessel was targeted after allegedly violating an American blockade by transporting oil from Iran and failing to comply with instructions from U.S. forces. The strike reportedly hit the tanker’s engine room using precision munitions.
India has strongly condemned the attack and summoned a senior U.S. diplomat in New Delhi to seek clarification and register its protest over the incident. Indian officials have also called for an end to attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran and growing security concerns in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
