Three people, including two volunteer rescuers, have died following a maritime tragedy off the coast of New South Wales in Australia.
Emergency services responded Monday evening after reports of a yacht in distress near South Ballina. A rescue team from Marine Rescue NSW was dispatched, but their vessel capsized in treacherous sea conditions while attempting the operation.
Two rescuers, aged 78 and 62, lost their lives after the rescue boat overturned. Four other crew members managed to reach shore with minor injuries and were later treated in hospital.
Authorities also recovered the body of a third man, believed to be in his mid-50s, on the nearby shoreline. Police say he was not wearing a life jacket at the time. His identity is yet to be formally confirmed.
Officials described the sea conditions as extremely dangerous, with strong waves contributing to the accident. The yacht reportedly struck a break wall before breaking apart and sinking.
