STORIES BY CHILDREN BOOK

You have been hearing about the Fernance and Cyrilla Family Club for some time.  This club is journeying into making the life of its family members and others in the public more meaningful.

The club, through its Stories by Children Committee, has embarked on building an interest in children for reading and writing. This has brought about the initiative of allowing children to express themselves through writing and thereafter compiling all entries into a story book.

On December 11, 2021, the first book, Stories by Children, Volume One – “Family” was launched.  On December 17, 2022, the Stories by Children, Volume two – “When I grow up” will be launched at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Auditorium from 3:30pm.

The Stories by Children – Volume two “When I grow up” features twenty-four (24) well written and exciting literary compositions, eleven of which were selected from the winners of the 2022 Stories by Children Literary Competition. The other compositions were received from children of the family. The names of the winners of the competition were published in previous releases.

The family authors are as follows:

Christopher Atilade      Joshua Saho

Zendaya Robinson       Abigail Saho

Glendora Ettienne       Dymond Daniel

Imani Henry             Keyondre Prevost

Jahrissa Carbon         Kelano Pascal

Hilkiah Constant

Stories by Children, Volume 2 is dedicated to Kernisha Ettienne, who was reported missing earlier in the year and whose whereabouts is still unknown.

The Stories by Children Committee wishes to again thank all those who contributed to the successful compilation and launching of Volume Two.  Special appreciation to the children who generously submitted their entries for this book.  To the judges, Mr. Jules Pascal, Ms. Rosalind Burnette, Ms. Sonia Christian, Ms. Windith Henderson, and Ms. Celia Nicholas, who volunteered their time and expertise in evaluating all competition entries, a big thank you. Additionally, we wish to highlight that the beautiful illustrations are the work of a young Dominican artist, Mr. Alphonsus Baron, making this publication a wholly and authentically Dominican product.

This book compilation venture will be a yearly activity. Children from the diaspora and Dominica can already begin exploring the theme “Connect the Dots!” for Volume Three in 2023.  The stories for this volume MUST include three elements which are a house at the street corner; a mango; and a dog.  However, the main idea for the story may be something other than the three elements. Entries will be judged on creativity, organization and mechanics. Winners from different age categories will be selected.  Further details on Volume 3 Literary competition will be given in future releases.

Remember Stories by Children – Volume 1 “Family” is available for purchase at Jays Book Store and from family members.  It is also available for order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Volume Two will be available to the public from December 17th!

Mrs. Nicole Toussaint Jno-Baptiste, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Fernance and Cyrilla Family Club encourages the public to purchase Stories by Children Volume One – “Family” and Stories by Children Volume Two – “When I Grow Up!”.  She also encourages the public to support the young ones in their efforts in building a bright future. This book could be an excellent gift idea for that special child!

From the authors of volume two:

Truh Francis:  “My main view on writing is focusing on your draft.  You should not be focusing so much on things like spelling, grammar and punctuation that would fall under the next stage of editing. Drafting is like a free void where you can do anything to your writing.  Today I am now one of the top writers of the Stories by Children, volume 2.”

Giana Marie Ducreay, “

Kelano Pascal, “

Jahrissa Carbon, “
