Saint Lucia one step closer to the complete adoption of Creole into local schools

Interestingly, Saint Lucia has announced that it is gearing towards fully adopting the Creole language into its education system. As of now, officials within the Ministry of Education and stakeholders are meeting to discuss and strategize on a way forward as well as develop an implementation plan for the integration of Creole into the school curriculums.

Moreover, the officials aim to achieve two main things, one of which is to ensure that students are bilingual at the primary level and onwards, while the other is to ensure that students are bi-literate. This would afford the students the abilities to speak, read and write fluently in the Creole language, all of which would enable cultural retention.

Additionally, as further deliberations continue among the officials and stakeholders, the official presentation of the National Language policy is set for July 2022.

With this bold step towards the sustainable development of Saint Lucia, the efforts to retain and improve the Creole language is indeed commendable as it provides hope for the continuity of the language in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean by extension.
