The graduation ceremony of the Portsmouth Secondary School was held on the adjunct campus of Ross University School of Medicine on Friday 29, June at 10:00 AM.
Ms. Rebecca George walked away with the Valedictorian award as well as the awards for English language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Most Outstanding Science student, Geography and Agricultural Science. Ms. George exemplifies the consistency in every way. She remained top of her class throughout her life although surrounded by tough competition from her peers. She also captured the prestigious James Fabien award. This award is sponsored each year by the family of James Fabien who was an outstanding former teacher at the institution.
The salutatorian award went to Abigail Lawrence who also took away the awards for Social Studies, Food and Nutrition, and Health. The student of the year award went to Vinyssa Valerie. Vinyssa, a true all-rounder also captured numerous other awards including deportment, conduct, table tennis female and Technical Drawing.
PSS is known to excel in sports and the awards for sportsman and sportswoman of the year went to Dennick Luke and Unique Powell respectively. The principal of the school highlighted many of the schools’ achievements including obtaining the top performers at last year’s CSEC examinations.
Hon. Reginald Austrie and Hon. Ian Douglas were both present to address the students and both encouraged them to take advantage of the free tuition at the Dominica State College.
The featured speaker was Kevin Carrette who in keeping with the theme addressed the students using the analogy of the bee as an example of Metamorphosis. He encouraged the students to influence the world around them and to be productive.
This was the 37th graduation of the Portsmouth Secondary and it was held under the theme ‘Wings unfurled, Metamorphosis Complete.
