Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre says the Caribbean’s freedom must now be measured by the opportunities its people can access, the wealth they can create and the region’s ability to feed and power itself.

In his 2026 Emancipation Day Message, delivered as Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Prime Minister Pierre moved the observance beyond remembrance and placed it within the realities confronting Caribbean people today.

“The work of emancipation continues. Political freedom alone is not enough. Our people deserve economic freedom. They deserve opportunity. They deserve ownership. They deserve prosperity,” he said.

For Prime Minister Pierre, the next stage of Caribbean emancipation must be visible in everyday life: young people finding opportunities at home, entrepreneurs building successful businesses, workers receiving dignity for their labour and local producers occupying a stronger place in regional economies.

“We must build economies where Caribbean people are creating wealth, not merely consuming it,” he declared.

The Prime Minister placed the region’s young people at the centre of that task. He called for schools to prepare students not only to find employment, but also to innovate, lead, establish businesses and master the technologies shaping the modern economy.

He said the Caribbean must become a place where young people can fulfil their potential without believing that success is available only beyond the region’s shores.

Prime Minister Pierre also linked modern emancipation to what Caribbean countries produce for themselves.

“No nation is truly secure if it cannot feed itself,” he said.

Every acre cultivated, farmer supported, fisher encouraged and Caribbean product placed on supermarket shelves, he argued, brings the region closer to genuine independence.

The same principle applies to energy. Prime Minister Pierre said affordable, reliable and cleaner energy can reduce living costs, create employment, strengthen regional economies and lessen dependence on forces outside the Caribbean’s control.

His message presented emancipation not as a completed historical event, but as work that each generation must carry forward.

Economic freedom, youth opportunity, food production and energy security, he said, are not separate policy ambitions. Together, they form part of the Caribbean’s unfinished journey towards justice, prosperity and lasting freedom.
