One Dead, Five Injured After Small Plane Crashes on Texas Highway
A small business jet carrying six people crashed on a highway in Laredo, Texas, on Tuesday evening, killing one person and injuring five others.
According to authorities, the aircraft crashed onto Loop 20, a major highway in the city, scattering debris across several lanes and forcing the closure of traffic in both directions.
Emergency responders, assisted by bystanders, rushed to rescue passengers from the burning wreckage. Video from the scene showed first responders and civilians working together to help occupants escape the aircraft, with some survivors seen walking away from the crash site.
The aircraft, a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude business jet, had departed San José del Cabo, Mexico, and was en route to Austin, Texas, before being diverted to Laredo.
Officials said the pilot reported mechanical issues shortly before 10 p.m. local time while attempting to reach Laredo International Airport. Contact with air traffic controllers was lost moments before the aircraft crashed approximately 2.5 miles short of the runway.
During its descent, the plane also struck a moving vehicle on the highway. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone in the vehicle was injured.
The five surviving passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. In addition, five police officers sustained injuries during rescue efforts and were also taken to hospital.
Airport officials indicated that the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure before the crash. Federal investigators, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are expected to lead the investigation into the cause of the accident.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those on board.
