The International Organization for Migration (IOM) deeply deplores yet another human tragedy in Caribbean waters. On Sunday, 24 July, at least 17 people of Haitian origin died, and approximately 15 more disappeared when a boat capsized 11 kilometers off the coast of the island of New Providence (Bahamas). The Coast Guard of the Bahamas rescued 23 Haitian migrants and two Bahamians.
IOM expresses its profound condolences to the families and friends of those who died or disappeared in this incident.
This new tragedy brings to 138 the number of migrants who have lost their lives in the Caribbean so far this year, according to the IOM鈥檚 Missing Migrants Project. According to the same source, 481 people have died during their migratory journeys between January 2020 and today in this same region.
IOM reiterates its call to the governments of the region to strengthen international coordination to save lives, strengthen the responses to migrant smuggling and human trafficking, and enhance the availability and flexibility of pathways for regular migration.
The need for more action is echoed by a recent statement signed by the UN Network on Migration heads. It highlights the need to urgently take collective responsibility to save lives, search for and identify the missing and assist their families, in line with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and with relevant obligations under international law.
IOM stands ready to support governments in making migration safe and dignified, supporting migrants and communities in vulnerable situations, and addressing the adverse drivers of migration and displacement.

Declaraci贸n de la OIM sobre la p茅rdida de vidas cerca de las costas de las Bahamas
La Organizaci贸n Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM) lamenta profundamente otra tragedia en aguas del Caribe. El domingo 24 de julio al menos 17 personas de origen haitiano murieron y unas 15 m谩s desaparecieron al volcar una embarcaci贸n a 11 kil贸metros de la costa de la isla de Nueva Providencia (Bahamas). Los guardacostas de Bahamas rescataron a 23 migrantes haitianos y a dos bahame帽os.
La OIM expresa sus profundas condolencias a las familias y amigos de los fallecidos o desaparecidos en este incidente.
Esta nueva tragedia eleva a 138 el n煤mero de migrantes que han perdido la vida en el Caribe en lo que va de este a帽o, seg煤n el Proyecto de Migrantes Desaparecidos de la OIM. Seg煤n la misma fuente, 481 personas han muerto durante sus viajes migratorios entre enero de 2020 y hoy en esta misma regi贸n.

La necesidad de una mayor acci贸n para salvar vidas de personas migrantes fue abordada en una reciente declaraci贸n firmada por los responsables de la Red de Naciones Unidas sobre Migraci贸n. En ella se subraya la necesidad de asumir urgentemente la responsabilidad colectiva de salvar vidas, buscar e identificar a los desaparecidos y asistir a sus familias, en consonancia con el Pacto Mundial para la Migraci贸n Segura, Ordenada y Regular y con las obligaciones pertinentes contempladas por el derecho internacional.
La OIM est谩 atenta a apoyar a los gobiernos para que la migraci贸n sea segura y digna, apoyando a los migrantes y a las comunidades en situaciones vulnerables, y abordando los factores adversos que dan origen a la migraci贸n irregular y al desplazamiento.
