Emancipation Day Observed

In celebration of the Emancipation of slaves in 1834 and 1838, Emancipation Day is celebrated in the former British colonies around August 1st.  Emancipation Day Celebrations take different forms but all activities are geared towards building greater awareness about the abolition of slavery and its importance to and impact on society.

Emancipation Day Celebrations is also a time which highlights the African retentions which are still with us today and the African influences on our culture. In Dominica, Emancipation Day celebrations will culminate on August 3rd, 2019, with the Golden Drum Awards at the Alliance Francaise.
