A young Dominican scholar, Onisca, has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first Dominican to graduate from the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Nautical Science & Maritime Operations Bachelor’s programme. She completed her studies with outstanding distinction, earning Magna Cum Laude / First Class Honours.
Onisca shared that her academic journey began “on a whim,” driven by determination and a clear vision to attain her degree. After securing a scholarship from the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation, she embarked on what would become a transformative and challenging chapter of her life.
The road to success was far from easy. She battled a prolonged illness, lived away from her family, and endured the heartbreaking loss of her close friend, Nathan Victor — a grief that deeply affected her. Yet, despite these hardships, she remained steadfast.
While at UTT, she immersed herself fully in student life, serving on the Student Guild for two years, volunteering, and maintaining exceptional academic performance. Her dedication culminated in an achievement she describes as both humbling and surreal.
In expressing gratitude, Onisca thanked her lecturers at UTT for recognizing her potential, as well as her family and friends whose unwavering support sustained her — especially her mother. She also extended heartfelt appreciation to the community she built in Trinidad, affectionately noting that she now feels like “officially a Trini too.”
As she celebrates this major accomplishment, Onisca reflects on resilience, growth, and faith, echoing the words of her late father: “Carpe Diem.”
