Statement on Voter Registration and Confirmation in Dominica  Resumption of Voter Registration 

The Dominica Business Forum Inc expresses its satisfaction that the Electoral Commission has restarted the  registration of new voters. This comes after the process was suspended for a year, an action that was in direct  violation of the Electoral Laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica. The organization views the recommencement  as a necessary step towards restoring integrity to the electoral process. 

Impact of Suspension on Eligible Voters  

Evidence suggests that the suspension of the registration process resulted in the disenfranchisement of at least  2,000 individuals who were otherwise qualified to register and vote. This group notably includes all young citizens  who reached the age of 18 during the suspension period. The Dominica Business Forum Inc believes that failing to  address the consequences of this suspension is unacceptable. Simply restarting the registration process is  insufficient; proactive efforts must be made to locate and provide a fair opportunity for all those who were  previously deprived of their right to register. 

Preparedness for General Elections  

As a result of the Electoral Commission’s actions, it is evident that Dominica is not currently prepared to conduct  a general election. The consequences of the suspension have undermined the country’s readiness and the integrity  of the electoral process. Any attempt to convene general elections under the present circumstances must be  considered as immoral, an insult to the intelligence of the Dominican people and a gross violation of the people’s right to free and fair elections. 

Concerns Regarding the Confirmation Process  

The Dominica Business Forum Inc is also deeply concerned by the apparent lack of enthusiasm among the  electorate towards the voter confirmation process. The government of Dominica opted for this process instead of a  complete re-registration of voters, which would have been more practical, economical, and less complicated. The  confirmation process has seen only 1,860 voters confirmed to date, according to the official website of the  Electoral Commission. This low number is a matter of serious concern and requires immediate attention. 

Support for Electoral Reform and Public Engagement  

Since 2019, the Dominica Business Forum Inc has invested significant resources in supporting electoral reform.  The organization is once again offering its assistance to the Electoral Commission to launch a nationwide  campaign aimed at encouraging all eligible Dominicans to confirm their status and register to vote.

The Dominica Business Forum Inc strongly encourages the Electoral Commission to dedicate one month in 2026  to an intensive campaign for voter confirmation and registration. This focused effort would help address the  shortcomings of the past year and strengthen the electoral process. 

The organization also appeals to all eligible Dominicans to ensure their names are on the voters list and to actively  encourage others to do the same. A reliable and impartial electors list is vital to the health and stability of  Dominica’s democracy.
