Dominica shares much in common with the neighbouring French Departments of Guadeloupe and Martinique including Carnival celebrations. While the Nature Island was lit with two days of Street jump up, Guadeloupe was also celebrating its carnival which takes place during two months in early winter and ends the day after Shrove Tuesday.
The main activities takes place in Basse-Terre including the grand parade, the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, traditionallly known as ‘Dimanche Gras’.
Guadeloupe has maintained the traditional feeling of carnival with revelers adorned in various costumes even ones sending social and political messages dance to the beat of traditional instruments.
