Breast, Cervical and Prostate Cancers Stated as The Leading Causes of Cancer Related Deaths in Dominica

Statistics from the Ministry of Health states that breast and cervical cancers in women, and prostate cancer in men, are the leading cancers related to cancer deaths in Dominica. This information comes from Ms. Yvonne Alexander, President of the Dominica Cancer Society at a church service on Sunday, February 3, 2019.

World Cancer Day is being observed today, February 4, 2019, under the theme, “I am, I will”. Ms. Alexander advised that these cancers can be detected early and treated through screening, which can enhance the chances of survival.

Alexander stated that the Dominica Cancer Society encourages all adult women to perform a monthly self-breast examination and have their annual pap-smear. Also, men over the age of 40 are encouraged to have prostate screening and engage in other preventative measures.
