BASSETERRE, St Kitts (WINN) — LIAT pilots are on board with the plan to restructure the regional airline to make it a more viable entity financially.
That’s the word from Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne, following the latest meeting in Bridgetown aimed at rescuing the financially starved LIAT.
Browne described the meeting between the shareholders and other stakeholders and key players in the airline as a fruitful one.
Antigua and Barbuda is one of the four major shareholder governments of LIAT.
Browne said, “It was a very fruitful meeting, and we got a commitment from all the stakeholders and all of the employee associations including the pilot association.
“The pilots’ association did agree that they wanted some more time to meet with their membership, but we got a distinct feeling that they recognized the urgency to act. We also would have received a commitment that they would do whatever is necessary to ensure the survivability and profitability of LIAT going forward because of LIAT cannot turn at least an operational profit then clearly its survival and sustainability would be questionable.
