The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy has maintained the importation of seed planting material of white potatoes and advises farmers that for the 2024/25 season a total of (1160 bags), of the Spunta and Desiree varieties are being imported to enable the establishment of over 40 acres of white potatoes.
The planned production will take place from December 2024 to March 2025 within agricultural regions with the best climatic and soil conditions to support efficient and successful production.
The Division of Agriculture through its Extension Services Unit hopes to engage over one hundred and twenty-five (125) farmers in cultivation of this crop by provision of seed material, crop inputs, technical advice, training and market facilitation through partnership with the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA), WUSC Dominica, the Caribbean Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the National White Potato Farmer’s Cooperative.
The potato seeds are expected to be on island on the November 22nd , after which will be a mandatory period for quarantine and diagnostic and phytosanitary testing.
Farmers interested in cultivation of white potatoes are asked to pre-register by providing this information to the Regional Extension Officer or at the farmer service center in your region.
