One Charged In Kalinago CocaineDebacle

Andray Alexis, a 25-year-old Bioche man was brought before Magistrate Micheal Laudat on Friday, June 16th, 2023  for charges of Possession of  a firearm without a valid license and Possession of Cocaine.

At approximately 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 12th, 2023, members of the Anti-Crime Task Force Unit proceeded to Salybia after receiving certain information. Upon arrival, one vehicle and its two male occupants were barred and extensively searched by the task force; nothing liable to seizure was found.

About 8:15 pm that same day Alexis, dressed in black from head to toe, was spotted walking along the road in Salybia. The young man was stopped and a member of the on-duty Task Force team noticed the tenacious grip that the young man had on a black package wrapped with clear tape with a logo written on a white paper under his shirt.

After being cautioned the young man was asked about the item to which he responded, “Officer, a brick that there.”

He was subsequently arrested for suspicion of Drug Trafficking by being in possession of a quantity of cocaine exceeding one gram (1g).

Andray was cautioned once again then responded, “Officer is on me all you get it eh, but is a partner up the road that give it to me, I can bring all you by him.”

At approximately 4:00 pm on Wednesday, June 13th, 2023, Andray Alexis was officially charged with Drug Trafficking  by being in possession of a quantity of cocaine exceeding one gram (1g) to wit one thousand, one hundred and thirty four grams (1134g). Alexis’ response was “I don’t like the situation I in there now, my first time”.

During the mitigation, Attorney-At-Law Joshua Francis represented the young Bioche man. He, Francis, emphasized on Alexis’ easy going and generally docile nature. He claimed that Andray was simply ‘following a crush’ to the Kalinago Territory and he was ‘at the wrong place, with the wrong people, at the wrong time’.

Andray proved to be extremely contrite throughout the hearing and cried to Magistrate Laudat to prove his remorse. He, ALexis, stated he was a simple fisherman and worked in agriculture as well as a means to make ends meet in his household. HE is a  major contributor to the home as he lives with his mother and other siblings.  Magistrate Laudat was impassive to the tears of the youth. He challenged, “you are remorseful now but can your remorse cure the effects of cocaine on the society?”

When the issue of sentencing arose, many factors were taken into consideration. Alexis was very remorseful and also extremely cooperative with the police. He also directed the police to the initial owner/holder of the drugs and he is a first time offender.

Andray ALexis was fined a total of thirty thousand dollar (ECD$30,000.00)to be paid as follows:

Five thousand dollars (ECD$5,000.00) by October 31st, 2023 or one month imprisonment by default, five thousand dollars (ECD$5,000.00) by January 31st, 2024 or one month imprisonment by default, five thousand dollars (ECD$5,000.00) by July 31st, 2024 or one month imprisonment by default,  five thousand dollars (ECD$5,000.00) by October 31st, 2024 or one month imprisonment by default, and  ten thousand dollars (ECD$10,000.00) by January 31st, 2025 or two months imprisonment by default.
