Marva Williams, Festival and Events Manager of the Dominica Discover Authority, has
successfully pursued a Master of International Business at the Georgia State University, amidst
life’s challenges. Williams who holds a previous Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Florida
International University, is from the southern community of Pichelin.
Williams is known as a very active person in her community and country by large. She has
participated in social activities such as Konte for seven (7) years, served on the Pichelin village
council for six (6) years, three of which she was deputy chairperson and was a former member of
the Tradibelle cultural group.
Upon interview with Emonews, Williams expressed that she is elated that she has embarked on
this journey. “I’ve always wanted to do my masters. There were quite a number of sleepless
nights but I give God all the praises,” she voiced.
Furthermore, she pointed out that she faced countless obstacles while pursuing this degree.
“Generally life has its challenges especially being the single mother of two, a thirteen (13) year
old boy and a (9) year old girl. I kept asking myself, ‘how am I going to be a mother and manage
school?’ However, I decided to bring my children with me,” she stated.
Additionally, Williams mentioned that she was faced with numerous financial challenges which
led her to engage in side hustles like hair braiding and house cleaning. “Despite everything I’ve
been through, I praise God through it,” she articulated.
Remarkably, she highlighted that her pursuit of international business can align with any aspect
in Dominica, especially those with an international appeal. Through this journey, it has opened
her eyes to ceaseless opportunities which may benefit Dominica. “Dominica is able to position
itself uniquely amidst the international area. We ought to analyze the socio-economic
environment to see where we fit in. We should also ensure that we develop mutual and effective
relationships to promote nature, the entertainment industry and more,” she detailed.
Following the completion of her masters, Williams voiced that she will be branching out to open
her own business “Marva Williams Versatile” which focuses on versatile event planning, events
project management, social media marketing, content creation among others. According to
Williams, she has always wanted to do something on her own. “I think from a personal
perspective I have a lot to offer and have been searching for ways to expand the horizon,” she
uttered.
With respect to her inspirations, Williams pinpointed a number of individuals who have been the
driving force to her success. “I allude my success to my mother, my cousin Joann and her
husband Val, my sisters, my family by extension and my friends at DFC who have supported me
through everything. Most importantly, without God this would not be possible,” she thanked.
Significantly, Williams encouraged other persons to seek God in all that they do. “I just want to
say in life we choose our joys and sorrows. We have to have patience, faith and we must trust in
God. Pray unceasingly. It does not matter who you are, rich or poor, set a path in your life and
God will see you through.”
In future, Williams is contemplating pursuing the Project Management Professional Certificate.
However, she is not limiting herself to no one goal. Whatever opportunity may present itself she
will evaluate its capabilities and its ability to redefine possibilities.
As Williams continues to shed light on her journey, Emonews extends hearty congratulations to
her and wishes her future success.
