Locally Made Natural Deodorants Help Consumers Stay Safe & Smell Great!

In recent years many people have become aware of some unpleasant side-effects of conventional antiperspirants and seek a natural alternative. However, effective natural deodorants have not been widely available in Dominica until now! Launched in 2020, the Bee Natural Deodorants are now a firm favourite with consumers seeking a natural, safe and effective solution for armpit hygiene.

The Bee Natural Deodorants are made with 100% natural ingredients and the formulation is effective at combating underarm body odour without any harsh ingredients such as artificial fragrances, aluminum or even baking soda!

Terri Henry, the founder of the Bee Natural range, explains that “Antiperspirants block the pores to prevent sweating but this goes against the natural function of the body. They also contain chemicals such as parabens, triclosan, phthalates and fragrance that disrupt the endocrine system. Quite a few natural deodorant brands use baking soda to prevent body odour because it is effective at altering the pH of the skin but this can also be a source of irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Instead of all these culprits, the Bee Natural deodorants use actives such as Magnesium (a natural mineral) and Zinc Ricinoleate (made from castor seeds). These ingredients prevent bacteria and odour molecules from forming on the sweat so they keep you smelling clean whilst preserving the natural microbiome of the delicate underarm skin. Arrowroot powder is used to help keep the armpits dry and pure essential oils impart gentle and therapeutic aromas.”

Consumers switching from conventional antiperspirants to natural deodorants are advised that they may go through a ‘detox’ period where sweating and odour increases for a short time as the body re-establishes its natural balance. Most users find that their level of sweat eventually decreases when they stop blocking it with aluminum based products but if the detox process does present discomfort, it can be easily alleviated with the use of a clay mask used as an ‘ARMPIT DETOX’.  This is a popular technique in the natural community where clay is mixed with apple cider vinegar and applied to the underarms a few times per week during the transition phase. This can also help prevent any rashes or skin irritation that can occur as the body cleanses itself of the chemicals in the antiperspirant and adjusts to normalcy. Bee Natural sells the Armpit Detox clay but also encourages anyone who already has ‘Jaydees Natural Tumeric Clay’ mask, to use this product and keep supporting local! Armpit hygiene also includes making sure to wash thoroughly under the arms whilst bathing and the effective washing of clothes worn close to the armpits.

Using a natural deodorant may have a range of positive health benefits and one significant effect noticed by many consumers is the reduction in dark patches in the underarms. This hyperpigmentation is usually caused by irritation from chemicals that block pores, artificial fragrances and other harsh ingredients that aggravate the skin. The Bee Natural deodorants contain only natural ingredients including skin-soothing Shea Butter, Mid-Chain TrIglyceride oil from Coconuts that is used for its antibacterial properties and local beeswax which prevents irritation. With these natural blends that support the health and natural vitality of the underarm, the armpits often return to their natural skin colour within a few weeks.

The armpits, located next to the delicate breast tissue, are a complex area of the body that hosts a large number of lymph nodes which play an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system. Terri, who is also the President of the Dominica Health and Wellness Association, says “It is important that we treat our armpits with care and attention rather than filling them with chemicals and waging war on our own body. A natural deodorant is just one part of a holistic skin-care and lifestyle practice. Members of the Dominica Health and Wellness Association offer a multitude of natural products and services for the body and mind including skin care, immune boosting foods, herbs and therapeutic services. The Association continually encourages all Dominicans to live as naturally as possible.”

In an effort to be in greater harmony with the environment, Bee Natural deodorants are also available in eco-friendly biodegradable tubes. The cardboard tubes are surprisingly robust and last the duration of the deodorant but they can’t get wet! To further eliminate the use of plastic, Bee Natural plans to introduce refillable containers with refills available by subscription in early 2022.

Bee Natural deodorants come in a range of 7 distinct fragrances in the 7 colours of the rainbow to represent the beautiful rainbows so often seen in the Nature Island. The Bee Natural deodorants have been exported to the UK, USA, Barbados, Martinique and were featured at the Dominica display booth at the World Expo in Dubai, and new markets are continually being sought.

Bee Natural Deodorants are sold locally at Jolly’s Pharmacy, Natures Discount, Bullseye Pharmacy (Roseau & Picard branches), Healthrite Plus, Zeb Kweyol and online at www.shopdm.store
