Delmance Ras Mo Moses, California resident and son of Delices, Dominica, has released a new song for the 2021 Carnival/Mardi Gras celebrations: Mama Carnival, with lyrics by Ras Mo and music by Ras Mo and Bernard George.
Mama Carnival, the mother figure In Caribbean carnival, empowers her children, giving voice to their lamentations and protests against injustice, celebrating their victories and advances. She is rooted in rooted in African masquerade, like the colorful sensé figures from Ras Mo’s home village pictured in the song’s cover art.
The joyful lyrics convey the euphoria and sense of freedom expressed by masqueraders in carnival celebrations worldwide. The music is based mainly on the Dominican Creole masquerade rhythm, ‘lapo kabwit’, literally the goat skin material used for traditional drumheads.
