2020 Valedictorian of the Dominica State College, Melissa Williams said that challenges are a necessary part of life. She said that while speeches are a challenge for her, she gladly accepted to this one- delivering the Valedictory address- with joy because “anything worthwhile usually comes with challenges”.
Williams outlined some of the many challenges faced by the class of 2020 from entering a DSC battered and bruised by Hurricane Maria, fires, and COVID-19 which forced them into virtual learning.
She said, “Many of us struggled with little or no internet access, there were financial hardships from the shutdown of our country and the fear of this deadly disease and its consequences. It really seemed as though the world was trying to do everything in its power to prevent us from succeeding. But…we are here today. This proves how resilient, strong and determined we are. We made it! We overcame our challenges and are stronger because of them”.
Williams expressed gratitude to those who assisted in one way or another including family and friends and faculty and staff of the DSC. She said that despite the challenges, the time spent at DSC by the class of 2020 was the highlight of their lives. They came for knowledge and left with so much more than just that.
She reminded her classmates that challenges give strength and define who they are and that they should not limit their challenges but challenge their limits instead.
Congratulations to Melissa Williams and the DDC class of 2020.
