The OECS Commission, in partnership with the Government of Dominica, officially launched the Root and Tuber Crop Symposium last week under the theme: “Our Food, Our Future – Strengthening and Expanding the Roots and Tubers Value Chain.”
The two-day symposium, held at the InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa, brought together farmers, researchers, and policymakers to discuss ways of strengthening regional food security and expanding economic opportunities through agro-processing and innovation.
The discussions focused on the importance of crops such as cassava, dasheen, yam, and sweet potato, particularly as the OECS region continues to face climate challenges and global supply chain uncertainties. Organisers emphasized that root and tuber crops are resilient, adaptable, and critical to reducing the region’s dependence on imported food.
The initiative forms part of the OECS FAST Strategy and supports CARICOM’s “25 by 2025” goal aimed at reducing food imports across the region. The European Union was also recognised for supporting the symposium through the RIGHT Project.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
