The Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy, successfully conducted the 54th cohort of its Basic Fisherman’s Training Course (BFTC) from January 12–15 with 29 new fishers completing the programme, including one female participant. Completion of this course is a fundamental requirement for registration as a fisher in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The training held at the Roseau Fisheries Complex Conference Room, was led by Fisheries Officer, Kurt Hiliton, with support and participation from other fisheries officers and resource persons within the fisheries sector, partners and NGO’s and related sectors.

Participants received comprehensive training in key areas essential to safe, sustainable, and profitable fishing operations. Topics covered included basic first aid, safety at sea, basic engine repair and maintenance, post-harvest handling, and an overview of the fisheries laws of Dominica. The course also addressed the business of fishing, including record keeping, cooperatives and group development, social security and retirement planning, and an introduction to aquaculture.

Additional sessions focused on emerging opportunities within the Blue Economy, as well as a newly introduced module on social media and communications, aimed at helping fishers better promote and grow their businesses via social media platforms.

The Fisheries Division remains committed to building the capacity of fishers and strengthening the fisheries sector through ongoing training and education.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
