GOVERNMENT HOSTS NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP AIMED AT BUILDING CLIMATE RESILIENCE IN COASTAL AREAS

Roseau, Dominica- April 24, 2025: The Government of Dominica in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Project (UNEP) and consultancy firms E CO and DHI will host a series of stakeholder sessions aimed at strengthening the climate resilience of communities and ecosystems in coastal areas.

The sessions are a follow up to National Stakeholder consultation process for the preparation of a GCF Funding Proposal for the project “Developing Climate Resilient Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Dominica”, leading to the implementation of a strategy to mitigate hurricane and flood damages along the coastal zones of Dominica held in June 2024.

The project responds to challenges posed to coastal communities by climate change including damage to infrastructure from terrestrial and coastal flooding and storm surges; and the impact of hurricanes on natural assets such as coral reefs resulting in the loss of livelihoods, including in the fisheries, agriculture, and tourism sectors.

To ensure broad-based ownership and transparency, the consultation process will include the full engagement of the National Climate Change Committee (NCCC) and will actively involve representatives from government, private sector, civil society, academia, and local community groups and organizations to discuss the strengthening of national and local adaptation planning processes, implementing coastal protection measures, and strengthening private sector investment in climate adaptive practices to support early recovery from hurricane events.  Discussions will also focus on ways to improve the use of climate information in decision-making in the finance and insurance sectors.

Representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy will also make presentations.
