A book by Dominican author, Roy Sanford, is among three featured as the Trinidad and Tobago-based Caribbean Books Foundation observes Caribbean Folklore Month in October.
The foundation said the books “offer a captivating journey in the the heart of Caribbean legends.”
The book, “Three Nights Later, The Soukouyan on the Roof and Other Stories,” was published in 2016 and is a collection of short stories based on Dominican folklore.
According to the Caribbean Books Foundation, it “explores the terrifying presence of the Soukouyan, a creature that preys on the unsuspecting.”
“Sanford’s stories are a blend of horror and cultural heritage, offering readers a glimpse into the rich and mystical world of Caribbean folklore,” it said in the feature.
Other books featured are “SouCou Yant: Her Fire Rages” by Trinidadian author, Marsha Gomes-Mckie and “SOUCOYAN” by Alwyn St Omer, an author from St Lucia.

A member of Waitukubuli Writers, a group of writers based in Dominica and the diaspora whose aim is to promote Dominican literature, Sanford’s stories have appeared in “Montage Domnik: New Stories and Poems from Dominica” and “The Flying Crapaud” a series of books of original and imaginative short stories written by Dominican authors.
In 2021, his story “The Rain” made it to the finals and received honorary mention at the Elizabeth Nunez Award for Writers from the Caribbean organized by the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival. The story was among eight which made it to the finals from an original pool of 30 stories written by writers from across the Caribbean.
Sanford is from the Kalinago Territory in Dominica.
