Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy and Livestock Farmers collaborate in Artificial Insemination for Livestock Enhancement

The Division of Agriculture’s Livestock Development Unit (LDU) has begun actively engaging farmers who have requested artificial insemination for their small ruminants. In 2023, 34 farmers made the collective decision to import one hundred and fifty (150) Boer and Nubian goat straws from the United States of America. This initiative is expected to enhance the genetic potential of the local herds and improve the overall productivity of local stocks.

From its inception, the LDU has been providing technical support to the farmers, and advising farmers on the intricacies of artificial insemination, as well as creating optimal conditions for conception and pregnancy.

As of April 2024, the initial cohort of eighteen (18) farmers has begun the process, and are expected to be serviced within the next seven weeks. The Unit will then schedule sessions based on the request by farmers.

Central to the successful artificial insemination is the careful management of the animals before, during, and after the procedure. The primary team involved in the insemination process includes, AI technicians, AHPO’s Emanuel Joseph and Kerry Shillingford, accompanied by Jose Henry (technician) and Dr. Nathalia Lugay with the support of the rest of the Livestock Development Unit. During the process, the animals on the various farms shall all be tagged for proper identification and improved data collection among small ruminant farmers.

The transition to artificial insemination represents more than just a technological advancement, shows a shift in the way farmers approach livestock breeding. The LDU hopes to have a positive impact on the breeding practices and success of the farmers.
