Rebuild Dominica, Inc. Partners with The Piney Woods School for 2024 Scholarship Program

WASHINGTON  Apr. 22, 2024 – The Board of Directors of Rebuild Dominica, Inc. announced today that the Dominica Diaspora 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has been granted two scholarships for two (2) deserving Dominican high school students to attend The Piney Woods School: a boarding school in the United States. The eligible students would have to be at least 14 years of age by Fall 2024 and currently enrolled in high school in Dominica with a B average grade or better. The desirable candidates must also have displayed civic leadership byway of involvement in community development projects, volunteerism, or possess other skills in artistic, scientific, or athletic endeavor. 

The Piney Woods School is the oldest boarding school in the United States started by African Americans in 1909. It is a school in Mississippi that sits on 2,000-acres and focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, with serious student engagement in agriculture and the industrial arts. The Piney Woods School is featured in a documentary film released February 2024, which is now streaming on Hulu: “Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story”. The school had a 100% percent college acceptance rate for the Class of 2021 according to the Jackson Advocate News Service. The Rebuild Dominica Scholarship is designed for aspiring public service leaders and nation builders in Dominica. 

According to Rebuild Dominica President, LaDàna Young (née Drigo), “We want our candidates to reflect the best of our country as academically, gifted, innovative, purposeful, patriotic problem-solvers, never shying away from a challenge. We want graduates of our program to become real ambassadors for our country, showing the world the best image of our nation, as dignified, productive, and disciplined people.”

All applications must be turned in no later than Sunday, April 28th, 2024 11:59 pm Atlantic Standard Time via email to the email address indicated on the form.
