Four schools participated in the semi-finals and finals of the HHV Whitchurch Creamery Ice Cream Inter-School’s Chess Tournament

On Thursday March 21st four schools participated in the semi-finals and finals of the HHV Whitchurch Creamery Ice Cream Inter-School’s Chess Tournament. They were the Dominica Grammar School, Orion Academy, the Isaiah Thomas Secondary, and the St Mary’s Academy.

The tournament followed the same format as the 1st phase held on February 22nd where each school had a 4-member team and the time controls: 30+30.  

In the semifinals SMA won against Orion 3 to 1, and ITSS also beat DGS 3 games to 1.

In the finals SMA tied 2-2 with ITSS in the classical time control. SMA then went on to win in the tie breaking rapid play-off 3 games to 1 over ITSS.

In the 3rd place play off the Orion Academy beat the Dominica Grammar school 3-1.

Final standing  at the end of the tournament:

1st place – The St Mary’s Academy

2nd place – The Isaiah Thomas Secondary

3rd place – The Orion Academy

Hearty congratulations to the St Mary’s Academy on winning this inaugural inter-schools chess tournament.

The Dominica Chess Federation was pleased to award cash prizes and trophies to the top teams as well as chess sets to all the finalists and semifinalists.

We congratulate all the schools which participated and encourage the students to keep playing the game of chess and strengthening their skills. We say a big thank you to our main sponsor HHV Whitchurch & Co. Ltd.
