In our September 1, 2023 media statement, Team Unity Dominica (TUD) congratulated Sylvanie Burton for her nomination as candidate for President of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
This nomination was made by the Hon. Prime Minister, Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit, in keeping with Constitutional protocols, which if accepted by the Hon. Leader of the Opposition, would not occasion a formal election for the Head of State.
We said then that we stand “ready to work with the presidential nominee in the capacity of President” and today, TUD is expressing our support and endorsement for Mrs. Burton in becoming Dominica’s next president.
It is our humble view that during this time of heightened political division, special moments like these should be embraced to show that there can indeed be agreement and unanimity, whenever and where necessary.
Mrs. Burton has served her Tribe, the Kalinago, with appreciable acclaim, she would be our nation’s first woman President – but not just that, she is eminently qualified for the job. In addition, Mrs. Burton has served the country in several contexts, and she has gained administrative experience through her post Permanent Secretary which helps to equip her to perform in the Presidency.
As we earlier stated, “our pledge is to build bonds of unity for meaningful progress” and this recommendation of Mrs. Burton serves as a testimony to this pledge. We, therefore, invite you to be with us at a virtual Press Conference on Wednesday September 20, 2023 from 10:00AM to discuss this development. The conference link and agenda are attached.
