TWENTY FIVE (25) INDIVIDUALS TO BENEFIT FROM PROFESSIONAL LIFEGUARD SKILLS TRAINING

The Ministry of Tourism and Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), in collaboration with the Dominica State College (DSC), has launched a Professional Lifeguard Skills Training. The two-week program will train participants in nine core areas such as Facility Safety, Surveillance & Recognition, Injury Prevention, Emergency Action Plan and Water Rescue Skills Theory.
The first cohort of twelve individuals will participate in theory and practical sessions from April 24 to May 5, 2023. It is expected that a second cohort of thirteen individuals will be trained in June 2023.

The two-week training is designed specifically for persons desiring to become professional lifeguards. It introduces participants to critical knowledge and skills required to operate effectively as a lifeguard. Additionally, the program places much emphasis on encouraging proper attitudes when dealing with visitors. The expected outcome is to develop a cadre of
certified lifeguards who will be stationed at water-based attractions such as Mero Beach, Titou Gorge, Champagne Beach and Calibishie Beach.

The program will be facilitated by Dorsen Robin, a certified Dive Master, First Aid, Swimming and Lifesaving Instructor. Mr. Robin’s lifeguard training and experience spans over three decades and across organizations such as the the Metro-Dade Fire Department in Miami, the United States Coast Guard, Panama Maritime Navigation, the Regional Maritime Training Center, Dominica Red Cross, Police Training School, and the Dominica Coastguard.
