Asaiah Yankey of the Portsmouth Secondary School has placed third in the U.S Embassy Fourth Annual Black History Month Secondary School Speech Competition.

Asaiah who spoke on leadership, gender equality and racial diversity says, “It was a thrilling experience to represent myself, my school, and my country. Writing about the qualities of exemplary leadership was especially enjoyable as it is a topic that I am passionate about”.

Asaiah placed third along with Dejonte Stephen of Grenada, while Tahirah Mann of Barbados placed second and Marika Baptiste of St.Vincent placed first.

The U.S Embassy has for four years now held this speech competition in February in commemoration of Black History Month. The students wrote on leadership and other topics including issues of race and gender. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic students throughout the Eastern Caribbean and not just Barbados were given the opportunity to participate and were allowed to do so through the submission of recorded videos. 15 counties participated in the c0mpetition.
